[something my wife wrote for our youngest daughter, who turns two today]
To my darling Penny, on your 2nd birthday.
When I learnt of your impending arrival, I had no idea how you would fit into my life.
There seemed to be no room for you.
Not in our car.
Not in our house.
Not in our lives.
Not in my heart.
But time passed and my heart grew… as did our lives.
We got a bigger car.
We rearranged the house.We prepared for your homecoming.
And I came to know you and to love you… so much so that you filled all the space we had made and our family grew around you and our hearts continued to expand just by knowing you.
And just as your tiny fingers are entwined in mine, so you have woven yourself into my heart… so much so that the only way to seperate us would be to break my heart.
Now our home rings with the sound of your singing and chatting… and our family seems ridiculous without you.
Thank-you for choosing to be part of this family.
Thank-you for teaching me that hearts, like families, always have room to grow.
